The West End Redbacks can today confirm the final contract list for the 2013/14 season, with opening batsman Sam Raphael and u19’s batsmen, Alex Gregory and Kelvin Smith (rookies) filling the final spots.
Along with newly signed duo, Andrew McDonald and Adam Zampa, the Redbacks were able to retain 14 required players from last year’s squad.
The full contract list includes 19-year-old left-hand batsman, Travis Head, who has been upgraded from a rookie contract following his first full season in first-class cricket.
After making his debut in January 2012, Head has played 14 Bupa Sheffield Shield matches, making 660 runs at 25.38 including five half-centuries, top scoring with 95 not out against the Warriors in Perth.
Right-arm paceman, Daniel Worrall has also been upgraded onto the senior list after his first season in domestic cricket.
Worrall was recruited from the Melbourne Cricket Club last season and played four Bupa Sheffield Shield matches, taking 11 wickets at an average of 34.36, and also played three Ryobi One Day Cup matches.
The Redbacks have rookie-listed left-hand batsman, Alex Carey, who debuted for South Australia in February 2013.
Carey, who made the move back to Cricket after two years with the Greater Western Sydney Giants, played one Ryobi One Day Cup and three Bupa Sheffield Shield matches at the end of last season.
Alex Gregory had a standout season in underage cricket. He was a member of the victorious South Australian U19 team that won the national carnival for the first time in 15 years. He made 121 runs at 24.20 including a highest score of 52.
Gregory was also a member of Australia’s U19 team that made the final at this year’s ICC U19 World Cup in Townsville. In the pool matches, he took 3/13 against Ireland and 2/12 against Nepal.
Kelvin Smith was also a standout in grade and underage cricket last season. Smith made 170 in a Futures League match against NSW in November and represented the Australian u19’s against New Zealand in April, making back to back half centuries.
Left-arm paceman, Nick Winter has been recruited from the ACT and was a standout player in the Toyota Futures League, winning the 2012/13 ‘Player of the Year’ at the annual Australian Cricketers Association awards.
"We invested in Sam Raphael last season and believe he has the game to succeed at this level", said West End Redbacks' coach Darren Berry.
"He was the most outstanding player in grade cricket in 2011/12 and we will continue to reward players who have form at that level."
"The selection of Nick Winter continues our proud association with the ACT. He follows players like Alex Ross and Sam Miller and it is a credit to the cricket system in the ACT to keep producing quality domestic cricketers"
"Alex Gregory and Kelvin Smith are two more young South Australians who had standout seasons at underage level and represented Australia.
"It is a great sign for cricket in this state with a number of young, local players on the contract list this season."
